Blueberries

Blueberries are one of the few fruits native to North America, with Indigenous peoples gathering and using them for food and medicine for more than 13,000 years. Tribes such as the Wabanaki, Cherokee, and Ojibwe dried blueberries for winter storage and mixed them into pemmican, while blueberry root teas were brewed for healing. The modern cultivation story began in the early 1900s, when horticulturists developed the first commercial highbush blueberry varieties. Since then, blueberries have grown from wild forest berries into a global superfruit, symbolizing resilience, health, and cultural heritage across generations.
